Associate Creative Director, Design

Who We Are

We’re Madwell, a full-service creative agency headquartered in sunny Bushwick with sister offices in Denver and Hong Kong. Get to know us at Madwell.com

Who You Are

You’re a creative savant with a hunger for more. More collaboration across departments. More opportunity to work directly with clients. More responsibility as a standard bearer of your discipline and as a mentor to those coming up through the ranks. You’re naturally inquisitive, entrepreneurial at heart, and ready to either a) make the leap from senior to ACD or b) interested in broadening your skillset as an ACD. You’re humble and adaptable, willing to kill your darlings when necessary, but ready to rumble when an idea’s worth defending. You’re an emerging leader with boundless energy and enthusiasm. And we want you.

What You’ll Do

As an ACD at Madwell, you’ll be responsible for helping to extract smart work across disciplines. Working closely with your managing CD and a variety of teams day to day, you’ll provide constructive and actionable direction to the creative team, troubleshoot and vet the fidelity of the work with strategy and comms, and interface with clients to synthesize feedback into action. Together with your AMs and PMs, you’ll maintain a close understanding of resourcing, process, and the health of the account, maintaining a can-do spirit along the way.

You will work directly underneath a managing CD. This doesn’t mean you’ll always work with them. Some accounts will be yours to own, some you’ll collaborate with your manager on, and still others might have another lead CD. But at the end of the day, your managing CD will be your Person. You will likely also work alongside fellow ACDs, and in some instances, you will be paired with an ACD of a differing background so that together you operate as a unit. If you couldn’t tell, we structure accounts based on client needs. Flexibility is important to us (and should be something you readily embrace). This role is based in our Brooklyn, New York office, but will remain remote until December 2021.

Specifically you’ll be:

  • Helping to guide cross-disciplinary teams toward the best possible work through sound, clear direction and close partnership with your CD
  • Working with your CD to craft constructive, actionable feedback for all members of the team, regardless of primary discipline
  • Helping to synthesize the work of creative, strategy, and media
  • Acting as your CD’s deputy on a daily basis; it will be your job to get into the weeds so they never have to
  • Establishing warm, confident client relationships and building trust with the client team
  • Working with your CD as well as your partner Accounts and Production counterparts to  translate client feedback into clear action items with clear deadlines
  • Providing creative leadership on existing business and new business pitches either solo or with ACD partners/CD support
  • Managing and resolving creative conflict internally and with the client in partnership with your CD
  • Proactively developing and refining the processes necessary to methodically address creative challenges of varying shapes and sizes; we love people who see a problem and jump in to solve it
  • Occasionally rolling up your sleeves and doing the work of designing or writing alongside your creative team; delegation is vital but so is a willingness to help along the way as needed

Our Must-Haves

  • Demonstrated excellence in primary discipline (aka writing, design, or strategy)
  • Exhibited strengths in conceptual thinking paired with a willingness to improve in areas where you may have less experience (e.g., if you started as a designer, you’ll need to learn to think critically of copy and words more than ever before)
  • Experience in creating advertising campaigns across multiple channels
  • Fluency across mediums; able to think and create in a medium-agnostic way
  • Superior strategic judgment
  • Excellent communication skills; must be comfortable representing the work to clients in all mediums and engaging with clients to a C-suite level
  • Business acumen and a willingness to incorporate that knowledge into the work
  • Adaptable, proactive approach to problem solving
  • Phenomenal work ethic
  • Empathy for your internal team, the client, and the client’s consumers
  • Comfort dealing with complex critical feedback in a way that allows you to maintain decorum and professionalism...maybe even crack a joke
  • Ability to inspire, motivate, cultivate, and clarify

What We Offer

  • Competitive medical, dental, and vision benefits, including a subscription to One Medical
  • Generous vacation and WFH policy
  • Retirement plan with matching
  • Performance-based bonuses
  • 12 weeks paid parental leave as a proud member of Pledge Parental Leave
  • Commuter benefits
  • Team and company outings and events
  • Monday morning brunch, free snacks, and coffee & beer on tap

Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability
Voluntary Self-Identification of Disability Form CC-305
OMB Control Number 1250-0005
Expires 5/31/2023
Why are you being asked to complete this form?

We are a federal contractor or subcontractor required by law to provide equal employment opportunity to qualified people with disabilities. We are also required to measure our progress toward having at least 7% of our workforce be individuals with disabilities. To do this, we must ask applicants and employees if they have a disability or have ever had a disability. Because a person may become disabled at any time, we ask all of our employees to update their information at least every five years.

Identifying yourself as an individual with a disability is voluntary, and we hope that you will choose to do so. Your answer will be maintained confidentially and not be seen by selecting officials or anyone else involved in making personnel decisions. Completing the form will not negatively impact you in any way, regardless of whether you have self-identified in the past. For more information about this form or the equal employment obligations of federal contractors under Section 503 of the Rehabilitation Act, visit the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP) website at www.dol.gov/ofccp.
